| | Janese Johnson | We go through similar cycles in our life as nature does.
Winter is usually a time of more reflection, of being quiet and going within. The landscape sits bare without a lot of color. All is still and silent, waiting for spring to burst forth with passion and new beginnings.
Spring comes along with the brightness of life. She invites you out of your home to experience the sensations of scent, color and warmth of the sun.
Summer
brings us to a time of fullness. The cycles that began in the spring
are now at their culmination. The plants, flowers and sun are at their
peaks. They are full on the outside, as the winter held the fullness
from within. From the phase of outer fullness, we then move into that
of letting go.
Autumn brings us
a new cycle of change. All life is letting go and preparing for the
stillness that is soon to come. The weather cools, the plants go to
rest, and the feeling of change is in the air.
All living
beings also have their own cycles interwoven in the same tapestry of
life. When we get out of sync with our own rhythms, we may we often
feel disconnected from our true selves as well as disconnected from
others. These disconnections lead only to unfullfillment, loneliness,
and sometimes despair.
This does not
mean that our cycles are precisely similar to those of nature. We might
have periods of going within and times of blossoming new beginnings
that do not follow the same timeline as the seasons.
The point is that if we can feel in touch with our natural rhythm, then we can feel more harmonious.
Because our
culture has a need to stay always in ìspring and summerî mode, we
oftentimes have difficulty with letting go and being in stillness.
These two ìseasonsî are critical for really having a love and passion
for life. Allowing oneself to continue full speed ahead most of the
time can lead to feeling fried and unable to rejuvenate.
Unfortunately,
in our culture we have learned to use outer things such as TV, drugs,
alcohol and other addictions to restore a natural balance of the
ìautumn and winterî rhythms.
Most of the
time, this does not succeed, because these artificial means of
restoring balance are actually draining more energy from us, and are
anything but life enhancing. But we will still try outer and
superficial behaviors in an attempt to bring about the peace for which
we long so much.
These thoughts
may seem untimely written, what with the change of winter into spring.
Spring is definitely a time of new beginnings and vibrant, outgoing
energy.
But if you are
feeling a need to slow down and go within, it doesnít matter what the
external season is. Your true self is telling you that you are needing
the inner season of winter or autumn rhythm right now in order to truly
get aligned with your own natural cycles. When we honor what our bodies
and minds are telling us, we can then experience the authentic
connectedness of being a part of all life.
