The Daily Planet's Opinion: Liz Truss makes a bid worth backing to lead U.K. forward
Saturday, 03 September 2022 09:20
“I am in politics because of the conflict between good and evil, and I believe that in the end good will triumph.”
— Maggie Thatcher

We urge the powers-that-be in the United Kingdom to choose Foreign Secretary Lizz Truss to be the successor to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The embattled Johnson announced his pending resignation on July 7 — and will remain as prime minister until a new Conservative Party leader is elected.

In the interim, Conservative MPs have narrowed the options for Johnson’s successor as party leader and prime minister to a choice between two candidates.

Either Truss or former Chancellor Rishi Sunak will be named the winner in September, after a run-off vote among Tory party members.

Regarding Sinak, many of his proposals appear to follow along the lines of the current U.S. administration’s idiotic/disastrous policies.

As for Truss, we respect and appreciate that she has stood by Johnson — and continues to serve in his lame-duck government.

While some have accused Truss of wrapping herself in the mantle of the late-great U.K. Prime Minister Maggie Thatcher (while accusing Truss of actually being “Thatcher-

Lite”), we think her deep admiration for Thatcher — a conservative icon — and Thatcher’s accomplishments, speak volumes about her — and all good.

Like Thatcher, Truss models herself as an anti-communist warrior, free-market evangelist and — truly — a conservative.

“The principles she (Thatcher) believed in were the right principles,” Truss said during a recent speech, which reportedly drew the biggest applause of the evening. “Enterprise, personal responsibility, giving people control over their own money, putting money back in people’s pockets.”

When the subject moved to national security, Truss was asked how she would react if faced wth a decision to unleash Britain’s nuclear arsenal to defend the U.K.

Truss answered, “It’s an important duty of the prime minister. I’m ready to do that.”

Truss has the steeliness to do the job, while, in our analysis, Sinak does not.

We think (and pray) that Truss just might be “the second coming” of the woman (Thatcher) known for her strong leadership  — as the “Iron Lady.”
