WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards, R-Flat Rock, on Aug. 25 formally requested that his House colleagues reject a pending censure recommendation issued against him by the House Ethics Committee.

In a detailed defense sent directly to lawmakers, the North Carolina Republican argued that the committee fundamentally misinterpreted unconventional-but-affectionate friendships with his staff as formal misconduct. 

While Edwards recently ended his re-election bid under pressure from GOP leadership, he remains in office and is fighting the resolution ahead of an expected full House vote.

The House Ethics Committee’s report concluded that Rep. Edwards engaged in “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” involving two female aides. 

The panel’s findings included the following:

• Lavish gifts: Edwards provided the staffers with gifts that exceeded normal professional boundaries, including over $1,000 in jewelry, designer purses, guns, shoes, electronics and vacations.

• Intimate interactions: The report detailed personal notes, poetry and one-on-one dinners, noting that a reasonable observer would interpret his behavior as a romantic or sexual advance.

• Official disruptions: The committee found Edwards skipped official House votes and rescheduled a tele-town hall to spend personal time with one of the staffers.

The panel explicitly clarified that while Edwards did not violate federal sexual harassment laws or engage in quid pro quo harassment, his behavior was “beyond inappropriate.”
