ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A 19-year-old man accused of shooting multiple people in downtown Asheville earlier in March had his first court appearance on March 17 morning, Asheville television station WLOS (News 13) reported on March 17.
The suspect, Calobe Workman, 19, turned himself in to authorities on March 16. His court appearance occurred one day later.
The shooting occurred on North Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville in the early morning of March 8.
According to police, nine people sustained “mostly minor” injuries in the incident.
Workman is charged with two counts of felony discharge of a firearm from an enclosure to incite fear. On March 17, a judge set Workman’s bond at $30,000. His next court date is set for April 7.
“Captain Joe Silberman with the Asheville Police Department said Workman will not be the last person charged in this incident,” News 13 noted.
“We believe there are multiple shooters and we expect additional charges for gunshot wounds and the physical assault in the coming days,” Silberman told News 13.
“Silberman said that when the bars let out around 3 a.m. March 8, a fight broke out between a group of people. He said the fight escalated into different people discharging firearms, and several people were hit.
“Warrants allege that Workman fired a gun from the front passenger seat of a 2012 Kia Forte into a crowd of people that were in the street on North Lexington Avenue. In total, seven people were shot, and two more had other injuries. All nine victims have since been treated and released, authorities confirmed.
“Silberman said it was a chaotic scene with multiple shooters in different locations.
“‘We have a good idea on the spacing of the shots, too: Who fired, what, when,’” he told News 13.
