ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Asheville Deputy Police Chief Jackie Stepp has been named the city’s interim police chief, effective Nov. 21, soon-to-retire Asheville City Manager Debra Campbell announced in a Nov. 21 press release.
Interim Chief Stepp has served the Asheville community with the Asheville Police Department for 20 years. As one of the APD’s deputy chiefs, she most recently oversaw the unit’s Administrative Bureau.
The announcement follows the retirement announcement of Asheville Police Chief Mike Lamb, an Asheville native, whose last day with the APD was Nov. 21, after nearly 28 years with the department.
Also, as she announced in February, the retiring Campbell’s last day with the city will be Dec. 5, when the Asheville’s elected leaders will name a new city manager.
As for Stepp, Campbell said in the release, “I am confident the department will continue delivering the highest level of service to our community under Interim Chief Jackie Stepp’s leadership. Her dedication to this organization and commitment to public service and safety will ensure a smooth and effective transition in this vital interim role.
Meanwhile, Interim Chief Stepp stated in the release, “I know firsthand the dedication and professionalism that define this department, and I am honored to serve the men and women of the Asheville Police Department, as well as our community in this interim chief role.”
More information about the recruitment process for a new chief “will be communicated as plans are finalized,” the release noted.
