From Staff Reports

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Despite being a millionaire, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, spoke about 40 minutes to a crowd on Aug. 10 at Harrah’s Cherokee Center’s ExploreAsheville.com Arena in downtown Asheville as a part of his “Fighting Oligarchy” (aka billionaires) tour.

More specifically,  the Asheville Citizen Times reported that Sanders’ Asheville speech was “to over 3,600” persons. It was his first visit to the city since 2019.

Regarding the meaning of “fighting oligarchy.” AI Overview stated the following:

“In the U.S., ‘fighting oligarchy’ generally refers to the effort to counter the influence of a small, wealthy elite who are perceived to exert excessive control over government and the economy, potentially undermining democratic principles. This often involves addressing concerns about income inequality, political corruption, and the undue influence of big money in politics.”

From Aug. 8-10, Sanders spoke in cities in the mountains of West Virginia and North Carolina. He spoke earlier in the day on Aug. 10 in Greensboro, N.C., before arriving later in the afternoon in Asheville.

During his speech in Wheeling, W.Va., Sanders criticized former Vice President Kamala Harris for her failed presidential campaign against Republican Donald Trump. (See story below for details on Sanders’ lambasting of Harris.)

Prior to Sanders’ speech, music was performed by Sylvan Esso, an electropop duo from Durham.

According to Sanders’ website, the tour involves “discussions across America on how we move forward to take on the oligarchs and corporate interests who have so much power and influence in this country.”

In Asheville, Sanders addressed numerous topics, including the Trump administration, media conglomerates and issues that he claimed Americans face each day.

“We can defeat authoritarianism, and we can create a nation and a government that works for all,” he told the Asheville crowd.

Sanders also touched upon how the Democratic Party “has turned its back on the working class of this country.”
