From Staff Reports
ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Asheville has seen four shootings, in four different locations, in less than a week, Asheville television station WLOS (News 13) reported on July 24.
“The Asheville Police Department is trying to stop it,” News 13 stated. “To do so, they’re asking for help from the community.
In the most recent shooting, which happened on July 23 night on John Street, “There was a vehicle that drove up and approached the apartments,” APD Chief Mike Lamb told News 13. “A group was standing outside. Shots rang out from the vehicles. One of the subjects was hit in the chest.”
The TV station noted, “Officers performed life-saving measures to get the victim to Mission Hospital, and the victim is now in stable condition, police said.
“That incident, along with three others at Ascot Point, Hillcrest Apartments and the Shiloh Community Center, is forcing the department to focus on the rise in gun violence.”
Lamb told News 13, “All but one have been drive-by shootings. These have been retaliatory shootings back and forth. The majority of them are retaliatory shootings between specific individuals in our community that are targeting each other.
“Whenever you have individuals targeting each other, there’s always a community in the crossfire. We don’t want multiple victims.”
The TV station added that s community tip potentially stopped more violence in the city.
“This week, we got information that there was going to be a retaliatory shooting at a certain location. We were able to put officers there to stop that from happening,” Lamb told New 13. “It’s important that the community works with us and we work together to be able to stop these shootings from happening.”
