After ‘saintly hors d’oeuvres,’ scholar-in-residence/theologian to lead Christian talks through July in Flat Rock

FLAT ROCK.  — The public is invited to study with the Rev. Dr. Rob MacSwain by attending sessions with him on Thursday evenings throughout July.

Each Thursday, “saintly hors d’oeuvres” will be served at 5 p.m., followed by a Christian discussion led by MacSwain at 5:30 p.m., beginning July 7, at The Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness, 1895 Greenville Highway, here.

Specifically, the appetizers will be served and discussion will be held in the Wilderness Room, in the front entrance of the Parish House, which is directly across the street from the church.

The 30-minute weekly “discussions” by MacSwain will focus on “Christian understandings of the Communion of Saints and how the lives of holy people testify to God’s existence,” a press release stated. 

MacSwain also will teach and lecture from 10:10 to 10:45 a.m. on Sunday mornings (July 10, 17 24 and 31) during the formation hour in the Wilderness Room.”

Attendees are encouraged to attend worship before or after formation at the 8:45 or 11 a.m. Sunday services, where MacSwain will share the pulpit with the clergy of St. John throughout July.

MacSwain, St. John’s 2022 Summer scholar-in-residence, is an associate professor of theology at the seminary in Sewanee: The University of the South, in Sewanee, Tenn.
