From Staff Reports

HENDERSONVILLE — The Super ‘60s band performed for what was billed as a “BIG Halloween Bash” on Oct. 17 evening in the parking lot outside Firehouse Subs at 825 Spartanburg Highway.

The free event, hosted by Firehouse Subs, attracted about 200 people.

Prizes were awarded for best costume in four categories: prettiest, scariest, funniest and most original. Costumes were not required, but were encouraged — and trophies were awarded, including prizes for youngsters. An event promotiion stated that “there will be expanded seated capacity and social distancing will be in effect. Masks will be required! NO SMOKING, NO COOLERS and NO PETS allowed.”

With colder weather arriving, the outdoor event was scheduled to run early — from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with a bank break around 7 for the costume contest. However, after the contest, when the high-energy band specializing in music from the 1960s launched back into action, it got colder and darker fast, so shivering attendees gradually — and obviously grudgingly — began to fold up their lawnchairs and depart. By 8 p.m. one of the leaders of the five-member band half-joked that the Super ‘60s, at that point, outnumbered those on the dance floor.

The Super ‘60s then wrapped up a bit early — by 8:15 p.m. — with Steam’s 1969 classic, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” followed by a medley of one key verse (or chorus) each of various early ‘60s popular early rock ‘n’ roll songs.

During the two-set show, a first-set highlight was a rendition of “The Last Time,” a 1965 hit by the Rolling Stones. In the second set, the crowd seemed to respond most enthusiastically to a Beatles’ medley (“I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” “Hard Day’s Night” and ”She Loves You.”) — and Neil Diamond’s 1969 mega-hit “Sweet Caroline.”
