Asheville-based belly dancer and dance teacher Lisa Zahiya traveled to Long Beach, Calif., last week, to compete in the Belly Dancer of the Universe Competition. Zahiya’s piece in the competition fuses belly dance and hip hop. More than 200 entrants competed in the 10 categories this year at the event, which has been held since 1999.
