Contestants begin to run in the Superhero 5K Race on Nov. 10. The event, which drew more than 300 runners, was a benefit for the Asheville fire and police departments. The course began at the Asheville Brewing Co. on Coxe Avenue, which sponsored the event. Participants ran through downtown Asheville and the Montford neighborhood before returning to Coxe Avenue for the finish. Participants were invited to dress as their favorite superheroes, and many rose to the occasion. Among the runners were people dressed as Batman, Spiderman, Superman, Wonder Woman and even a Powdered Toast Man from the 1990s cartoon show Ren and Stimpy. Rett English, of Arden, won the race in 17 minutes, 10 seconds. However, an anonymous Spiderman was the first costumed runner to cross the finish line. Staff Photo by JIM GENARO
