Mike Love waves to an appreciative crowd in Canton during a concert by the Beach Boys at Pisgah Memorial Stadium last Saturday night. Love, who played the saxophone in the bandís early days, was mainly the co-lead singer in the 1960s, along with Brian Wilson. Love sang the lead vocals on many of the Beach Boysí biggest hits, including ìSurfiní Safari,î ìSurfiní USA,î ìLittle Deuce Coupe,î ìBe True to Your School,î ìFun, Fun, Fun,î ìLittle Saint Nick,î ìI Get Around,î ìWhen I Grow Up (To Be a Man)î and ìCalifornia Girls.î His lead vocal roles later diminished as other membersí voices began to be heard more, but he remained one of the most recognized voices in the group, on songs such as ìDo It Again.î He is also known for his bass vocals, such as the vocal break in ìI Can Hear Musicî and the bass line in ìGood Vibrations.î Onstage, Love has always served as the Beach Boysí MC, introducing songs and band members.
