UNCA awarded long-time local business leader, mentor, and philanthropist Janice W. Brumit with an honorary doctorate of humane letters during the ceremony. "Along with her husband Joe Brumit, her dedication to advancing education in Western North Carolina, including UNC Asheville, has embodied her deeply held conviction that “education is the great equalizer,” the release stated.
“Early on we understood the power of education and how it could life people and communities out of poverty,” Ms. Brumit said. “I hope you have developed a lifelong obsession for learning, a passion for creativity, and an avid curiosity to create a better world,” she said to the graduates.
Evelyn Chiang, recipient of the 2025 UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and professor of psychology, and student government president Obianko Osaro also shared remarks with the graduates.
“You have the capacity to help create a better world for us all,” Chiang said. “I believe that you will.”
“As you step into the next chapter of your life after college,” Osaro added, “you stand on the threshold of a vibrant new world, brimming with opportunities and challenges that come with being a proud college graduate.”
