The Undertones, an all-male a capella group that debuted this past year at UNC Asheville, recently provided a lively performance, complete with some choreography reminiscent of the Motown era, in UNCA’s Highsmith University Union to a standing-room-only crowd comprising mostly students. A capella singing groups are springing up on college campuses across the nation and are enjoying unprecedented popularity. The Undertones’ repertoire included a poignant rendition of Curtis Mayfield’s “It’s Alright,” a 1963 classic Mayfield recorded with The Impressions. The April 26 show was opened by All Girl Staff, UNCA’s all-female a capella group, which performed memorable renditions of “Runaround Sue” by Dion & the Belmonts. and “Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina & the Waves.
