The Daily Planet’s Opinion: At 85, Ringo Starr sets terrific example by still running, lifting weights

If you’ve ever wondered how Ringo Starr, who is 85 years old and still touring the world, stays in good physical shape, he recently told Rolling Stone magazine his secret as follows:

“Well, you’ve got to eat more broccoli. All the good things about me, I blame broccoli for. So now I say, ‘peace and love — and broccoli.’”
— Ringo Starr
We are so impressed with Ringo Starr, who, at 85, continues to maintain his fitness by working out with a trainer three times a week and hitting his home gym for additional cardio, including treadmill running and lifting weights.

The legendary Beatles’ drummer, who is preparing for yet another tour, reportedly is focusing on staying active, eating well and maintaining a youthful mindset to keep up his energy.

Following is a summary of Starr’s health plan at 85:

• Active routine: Starr works out four to six days a week, often with a trainer, to maintain muscle mass and bone density.

• Fitness regimen: His routine includes cardio, specifically running on a treadmill and weight training.

• Diet and lifestyle: He attributes his longevity to a healthy diet (often citing broccoli and blueberries) and being sober.

• Mental approach: Despite his age, he often tells interviewers he feels like he is 24 years old in his mind.

• Ongoing activity: He continues to tour with his All Starr Band and releases new music, with a new album, “Long Long Road,” produced by T Bone Burnett, set for release.

Starr has often advised that for longevity, “no one can do it for you, you’ve got to get out of bed and do it.”

In a Facebook posting, a woman wrote, “How is this guy better- looking at almost 90 than when he was in the Beatles?”

To that, we must add that Starr, radiating what observers call “unbelievable youthful energy,” provides a sterling model for successful, healthy aging.

And we think Starr should write a song called “All You Need Is Broccoli.”
