BLACK MOUNTAIN ÇƒÓ Black Mountain Mayor Will Kennedy announced Sept. 19 that he will be resigning his position at the end of the month because of an illness.
Kennedy served as mayor for 10 months, after having previously served eight years as a town alderman. He served as vice mayor for four of those eight years.
His resignation is the result of being diagnosed with renal amyloidosis, a severe kidney disease, according to a spokesperson for Kennedyës family.
"Willës resignation will leave big shoes to fill in our town," Town Manager Tony Caudle said.
During
his tenure as mayor, Kennedy took part in the townës decision to
purchase the Clevenger property, paving the way for construction of a
new fire station, as well as the Grey Eagle Indoor Arena.
He also oversaw
the townës response to the 2004 floods that resulted from hurricanes
Frances and Ivan. Recently, Kennedy was instrumental in opening talks
with Montreat College to explore the possibility of constructing shared
recreational facilities.
According to
state statutes, the townës Board of Aldermen must now appoint a new
mayor who will serve until the next general election in November 2007.
At that time, an election will be held for someone to serve the remainder of Kennedyës term through November 2009.
The board may choose to select a member from its ranks or to choose someone else from the community.
However, if it
chooses one of the aldermen to fill the position, the board will have
to select someone to replace that personës position as alderman until
the November 2007 election.
