Solutions sought after $1.65M spent
From Daily Planet Staff Reports
Dozens of new way-finding signs recently installed around Asheville are peeling, prompting the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority to seek a solution to the problem.
A solution is expected to be proposed by the sign vendors by mid-July.
The TDA has formally requested that the sign design team, Merje Design in West Chester, Pa, provide some definitive answers.
L&H Signs in Reading, Pa., is the main contractor, and company
officials said they have worked diligently to find the exact cause of
the problem, and a resolution.
Installation on the sign project, which includes more than 300
elements throughout Buncombe County and cost $1.65 million, started last
December and was completed in late May.
Some of the signs started peeling just a few days later, and now
about 30 of the larger vehicular directional signs are coming apart.
The signs — funded by the hotel room tax — are a complicated
issue because multiple vendors were involved and they want to get the
solution right, according to TDA officials.
