Under threatening skies that turned into a full-fledged, albeit short, thunderstorm, Pack Square Park celebrated its opening as a “milestone” event rather than a “grand opening” on May 28 in downtown Asheville. After five years, the project is $2 million in debt to the city and lacks public restrooms and a permanent covering for the stage, prompting city officials to insist on calling it a “milestone.” Event highlights included Mayor Terry Bellamy (top) addressing the attendees, after which Blake and Lesley, 880-AM radio talk-show hosts. introducing the band Skinny Legs and All, as the crowd flees during the storm. Later, The Kat Williams Jazz Ensemble performed, packing the park with fans. Daily Planet Staff Photos
