A rally that drew less than a dozen protesters was held June 22 in front of WLOS and WMYA TV studios in South Asheville.
The rally was held to express opposition to and concern about ABC-TV’s
decision to give unopposed airtime to President Barack Obama to express
his views about health care on June 23. WLOS and WMYA are ABC
affiliates.
The protesters were a “grassroots group and non-partisan,” Robert Malt, a spokesman for the gathering, told the Daily Planet.
Insofar as a national network letting a politician speak unopposed at
length, Malt said, “Once you’ve started down this path, it’s a bad
precedent ... One-sixteenth of the entire U.S. economy is at stake with
health care,” so the issue merits wide-ranging debate.
During the protest, newscaster Holly Hedrick interviewed Malt
and the interchange got a bit testy when Malt accused ABC-News of
lacking journalistic integrity.
WLOS’ General Manager Jack Connors greeted the protesters and
said their concerns are “something that should be discussed vigorously.
