The Leadership Asheville Forum featured a luncheon debate in Asheville on Aug. 27 between Republican Nathan Ramsey and Democrat David Gantt, the two candidates running for chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. Ramsey is the incumbent and Gantt, who is a member of the commission, is seeking to unseat him. The pair debated many issues, including the board’s controversial decision to sell a portion of parkland on City-County Plaza to developer Stewart Coleman for his proposed Parkside condominium project. On Aug. 28, a judge ruled that the land sale was illegal, thereby preserving the property as parkland, pending Coleman’s decision on whether to file an appeal.
