Robert Rauschenberg, who studied at Black Mountain College from 1948 to 1952 and went on to become a renowned pop artist, died last week at age 82 at his home in Florida.

The prolific, highly influential artist helped make the school a legend in artistic circles.

His oft-repeated quote was that he wanted to work “in the gap between art and life.”
