Youths wear colorful masks during the traditional dance, “El Güegüense,” in Diriamba City, about 30 kilometers south of Managua, Nicaragua, this past Sunday. Thousands of people participated in this festival honoring the patron saint San Sebastián. El Güegüense (also known as Macho Ratón) is a satirical drama and was the first literary work of post-Columbian Nicaragua. It is regarded as one of Latin America’s most distinctive colonial-era expressions and as Nicaragua’s signature folkloric masterpiece, combining music, dance and theater. The festival runs Jan. 17-27. EFE/Mario López
