UNC Asheville campus police cited Tierney Oberhammer, 19, of Spruce Pine for driving after consuming alcohol under the age of 21 at 2:44 a.m. Nov. 19.
Campus police reportedly observed Oberhammer sitting in her vehicle, a
white Ford Escort, in the parking lot at the Botanical Gardens at
Asheville. Oberhammer then drove out of the parking lot and turned
right onto W.T. Weaver Boulevard.
Next, Oberhammer reportedly began driving at an extremely slow speed
and using her brakes erratically. She then veered onto the on-ramp of
U.S. 19/23, before pulling off to the side of the road.
Police then activated the emergency lights on their vehicle and approached Oberhammer.
In a subsequent conversation with police, Oberhammer reportedly said
that she had a flat tire and was attempting to drive home. Officer
Brandon Hunnicutt examined the tire with Oberhammer and reportedly
detected a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.
At that point, Hunnicutt asked Oberhammer if she would submit to an
alco-sensor test, to which she agreed, reportedly registering a .08
blood alcohol level. He then informed her that police would wait 10
minutes and perform the test again.
In the second test, Oberhammer registered a .10 blood alcohol level.
Police then placed her under arrest and transported her to the Buncombe
County Detention Facility.
At the facility, police administered an Intoxilyzer 5000 test, during
which Oberhammer reportedly registered a .05 blood alcohol level.
Police then charged her with driving after consuming alcohol under the
age of 21. She was held in the facility under a $100 bond.
In a separate matter, campus police reported an incident of
communicating threats at 7:20 a.m. last Monday at University Heights.
As of presstime, police still were conducting interviews and
investigating the incident. No arrests had been made as of noon Tuesday.
