NASHVILLE, Tenn. ?? The Asheville Police Department earned re-accreditation for the next three years, effective Nov. 19, from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
The re-accreditation was announced at CALEA??s annual meeting on Nov. 19 and was accepted by Police Chief Bill Hogan.
The accreditation uses 446 performance standards that seek to measure
the department??s professionalism, organization, personnel, prisoner
services, auxliary services and a range of other factors, all requiring
written documentation.
While Asheville police have been accredited by CALEA since November
1994, the commission??s standards require periodic re-accreditation.
A team of CALEA assessors visted the department in the third week of
August to assess its compliance with the commission??s standards.
CALEA was founded in 1979 through the combined efforts of several law
enforcement agencies and aims to establish standards for professional
excellence within police departments nationwide.
Accredited agencies enjoy reduced civil liability if they maintain CALEA standards, police spokesman John Dankel noted.
