UNCA student, 21, arrested
on drug-related charges

UNCA campus police last Sunday arrested a student on possession of a schedule one controlled substance, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia in Mills Hall.

Wessley Paul Roberts, 21, of Charlotte was arrested about 11:30 p.m. and later transported for processing on felony charges to the Buncombe County Detention Facility. He eventually was released on a $2,000 secure bond with a promise to appear in court this past Tuesday.

The arrest occurred after police responded to a call from the Mills Hall housing staff, reporting a possible odor of marijuana emanating from the residence hallës third floor.

Upon arrival, officer Brandon Hunnicutt determined the odor was coming from Room 309, where he made contact with Roberts, who consented to a search of his room.

The scent of marijuana became stronger once he entered the room, Hunnicutt reported. In lieu of a search, Roberts presented the officer with a white lock box from a drawer.

The box, which Roberts opened on his bed, contained a bag of 1.04 ounces of a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana, a glass pipe, a bag of psilocybin mushrooms, a bottle of Tizanidine pills and a baggie with bullets.

Roberts told Hunnicutt the pills were muscle relaxants given to him by a friend ÇƒÓ and the ammunition was for a Smith & Wesson handgun he had left at a friendës house in West Asheville. Roberts reportedly said he was saving the mushrooms for a special occasion.

At that point, Hunnicutt placed Roberts under arrest and transported him to the campus police station to weigh the alleged illegal substances. Roberts was then taken to  the detention facility.
