UNCA takes down Furman 79-65 with second-half run

UNC Asheville placed four players in double figures as the Bulldogs picked up their first victory of the season by roaring past Furman, 79-65.

Asheville (1-4) was led by senior guard Omar Collington, who scored a career-high 21 points, 18 of which in the second half. Collington tied a career high in rebounds with six and had four assists. Joseph Barber added 13 points, while forward Joey Harrell chipped in 11 points. Reserve forward Garrett Moles finished with 10 points.

The Paladins (3-4) were led by Robby Bostain with 17 points. Eric Webb added 10 points.

Asheville controlled the board with a 45-26 advantage. The Bulldogs outscored the Paladins 30-18 in the paint. Oliver Holmes led the UNCA rebound effort with 11 boards.

The Bulldogs led 32-29 at halftime, but came out of the second half blazing as they scored the first 16 points to lead 48-29. Collington and Harrell hit back-to-back 3-pointers to get Asheville up by 18 with 15:40 left.

Furman made a quick run and closed to 59-47 on a lay-up from Jadee Jones with 8:41 left. The Bulldogs countered and with an 10-2 run as lay-ups from Moles and Collington pushed the lead to 67-49 at the 5:36 mark.
The Paladins made one more run as they scored 10 straight points to get to 67-59 as an aggressive full-court defense forced four Asheville turnovers. Webb led the run with back-to-back treys.

Furman had two chances to get closer than eight, but misfired on two straight 3-point attempts. The Bulldogs closed out the victory by getting six straight points from Collington and going 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Asheville led from start to finish in the first half. The Bulldogs got an unexpected boost from walk-on Garrett Moles who scored eight points to help lead UNCA. It was the sophomore forward??s first career points.
