UNC Asheville topped Radford University 67-57 last Saturday in the Justice Center to win the Big South Conference tournament and clinch its first invitation to the NCAA Division 1 womenís basketball tournament. UNCA (21-11), the No. 4 seed in the tourney, outlasted Radford through 13 second-half lead changes.
Amanda Elder, a senior forward for the Bulldogs, was named the BSC tournament most valuable player. She finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.
In addition to
Elder, UNCA senior guard Brittany Hendley, who chipped in 17 points and
eight rebounds against Radford, was named to the BSC all-tournament
team.
The Bulldogs,
led by second-year coach Betsy Blose, will play LSU (26-7) at 10 a.m.
Saturday in Austin, Texas, in the NCAA tournamentís first-round.
Bloseís first UNCA squad finished 2-35 last season.
UNCA beat Coastal Carolina 65-51 in its tournament opener last Thursday and ripped Winthrop University 64-53 on Friday.
