Bulldogs rip Chanticleers 77-64 to advance in tourney

CONWAY, S.C. ó UNC Asheville pounded Coastal Carolina 77-64 in the first round of the Big South Conference menís basketball tournament on Feb. 27.

The victory, the Bulldogsí second over the Chanticleers in less than a week, enabled UNCA (12-18) to advance to a second-round clash with  top-seeded Wingate University.

For the game, UNCA shot 53 percent from the field, highlighted by 7-foot-6 sophomore center Kenny Georgeís first career double-double. George finished a perfect 6-for-6 in shooting (including five dunks) and snared 10 rebounds. He also had four blocks and altered many other shots.


The Bulldogs fell behind by as many as nine points in the first half, but dominated thre remainder of the game. UNCA mixed transition baskets with tough defense.


Leading UNCA were guards K.J. Garland and Bryan Smithson, who combined to score 35 points and dish 12 assists.
