After trailing most of the game, High Point University hit a 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds left to sink UNC Asheville 69-67 in menís basketball last Wednesday night at the Justice Center.
Eugene Harris, a freshman guard, nailed the 20-foot shot for the Panthers (19-8, 9-2), leaving the Bulldogs reeling from their third loss in the final seconds this season.
UNCA (8-18, 3-8) led 49-36 with 13:50 left, but suffered seven turnovers in 10 minutes. In the final two minutes, UNCA reserve center Kenny George broke a 63-63 tie with two straight baskets and added a blocked shot.
With
35 seconds remaining, the Bulldogs led by four points. Then, High Point
turned the tide when Panthersí forward Arizona Reid hit a 3-pointer to
slice the deficit to one point. After the Bulldogsí K.J. Garland missed
the front end of a one-and-one, Reid missed a jumper, but Harris
emerged with the loose ball and hit the winning basket. At the buzzer,
Garland lobbed a 25-footer that missed everything.
The Bulldogs
were led by George, a 7-7 sophomore, who netted a career-high 14 points
and seven rebounds in 17 minutes; and Garland, who scored 14 points and
dished nine assists, putting him at 307 career assists and ninth on
UNCAís all-time list.
