TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ó UNC Asheville opened the baseball season with three losses in a three-game series to No. 10 Florida State University this past weekend at Dick Howser Stadium.
The weekend wins left FSU at 6-0 on the season and dropped UNCA to 0-3.
In the series opener, FSU beat UNCA 17-8 last Friday, in a victory keyed by three errors by the Bulldogs in a seven-run fourth inning.
UNCA
was led by Rob Vernon, who finished 3-for-4 with a double and a home
run; Edmund Locklear, 3-for-5 with two RBIs; and Kyle Smith, 2-for-4
with two RBIs.
On the mound,
Bulldogsí starter Alan DeRatt took the loss, giving up 11 runs on eight
hits in 3-1/3 innings. He walked six and struck out one.
In the second game, the Seminoles committed four errors but smacked 14 hits to drill the Bulldogs 12-6 on Saturday afternoon.
FSU was led by
catcher Buster Posey, who drove in three runs for the second
consecutive game. Posey was among three Seminoles to swat three hits,
along with Tony Thomas Jr. and Brandon Reichert.
On Sunday, the Seminoles ignited from the start to gain an early lead en route to a 15-1 win.
The Bulldogsí
lone run was driven in during the seventh inning by Elliott Arrington,
who finished 2-for-4. Arrington was UNCAís leading hitter in the
three-game series, going 5-for-13 with three RBIs.
FSU pounded UNCA
starter Ben Buchanan (0-1) for four runs each in the first and second
innings and three runs each in the third and fourth innings to amass a
14-0 lead.
Getting the win for the Seminoles was Bo Oídell (1-0), who allowed two hits and fanned four batters in four innings.
