LEXINGTON, Va. ó Virginia Military Institute roared back from an early deficit to rock UNC Asheville 102-88 in Big South Conference menís basketball last Saturday.
A BSC single-season scoring record was set during the game by the Keydetsí Reggie Williams, who scored 21 points. Despite scoring below his 28.6-point average, Williams set a league record with 764 points.
VMI (12-5, 5-6) was led by Matt Murrer, who scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Despite losing
in a shootout, UNCA (8-17, 3-7) finished with four players in double
figures, including Bryan Smithson, 23 points; K.J. Garland, 21 points;
Vincent James, 12 points; and Reid Augst, 10 points.
The Bulldogs led 40-26 with about 11 minutes left in the first half, but the Keydets rallied to lead 52-46 at halftime.
Fueled by a 10-1
run, UNCA closed to within 84-81 with 7:52 left, but VMI pulled away to
seal a commanding victory with a 14-point margin.
