Winthrop University walloped UNC Asheville 88-69 last Saturday at the Justice Center en route to its 15th consecutive regular-season victory over the Bulldogs in menës basketball.
As Winthrop scored virtually at will in the Big South Conference matchup televised on Sports South, a shouting match erupted between fans of the respective teams.
In a taunt of UNCA backers in their own gym, a large contingent of Eagles fans chanted, "This is our house!" prompting a shouting match as the Bulldogsë faithful responded.
Winthrop (19-4, 9-0), which led by as many as 24 points, hit 12-of-22 3-pointers (54.5 percent).
While UNCA
(7-16, 3-6) committed only five turnovers, it allowed Winthrop to shoot
53.6 percent. The Bulldogs finished at a dismal 33.3 percent shooting
from the field.
Winthrop led by
13 points at intermission, but UNCA was able to narrow the margin to
seven, 52-45, with 11:43 left on a Bryan Smithson layup.
However, the
Eagles netted five 3-pointers on their next eight possessions to take a
commanding 18-point lead. Winthrop then sealed the victory by hitting
9-of-10 foul shots.
Leading UNCA was
Smithson, with 20 points; junior guard K.J. Garland, 15 points, eight
rebounds and four assists; and senior forward Joey Harrell, seven
points, five rebounds and five assists.
For Winthrop,
four players finished in double figures, including Michael Jenkins, 25
points; Phillip Williams, 19 points; Taj McCullough, 13 points; and
Antwon Harris, 10 points. Jenkins was 4-of-5 on 3-pointers and
registered four assists.
Next, UNCA will host Brevard College at 7 tonight at the Justice Center.
