CULLOWHEE ?? UNC Asheville stormed back from a 13-point second-half deficit to rally past Western Carolina 77-66 in overtime in women??s basketball at the Ramsey Center last Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (4-1) outscored the Lady Catamounts 28-4 in the final six
minutes of regulation and overtime to pick up their third straight win
over WCU (0-5).
Stacy Shepard led Asheville with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while
Ashton Barton contributed 17 points. Kristal Hood, plagued by foul
trouble, finished with 14 points. Brittany Hendley added 14 points,
seven rebounds and seven assists.
The Bulldogs trailed 62-49 with 6:30 left in the game but got a
three-point play from Shepard and a trey from Hendley to cut the lead
to 62-55. Asheville narrowed the lead with key steals from Hood and
Kate Baldwin. Hood hit two free throws to get Asheville within 62-61
with 1:05 left. She hit 1-of-2 free throws at the 25-second mark to tie
the game at 62-62.
Western Carolina played for the final shot to win the game at the end
of regulation, but Chevron Keith??s trey missed and Baldwin corralled
the rebound to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Erin May hit two free throws to put WCU in front, 64-62.
Barton then scored on a three-point play to put the Bulldogs in front
for good, 65-64.
The score remained 65-64 for the next three minutes, until Elder took a
pass from Hood and scored on a three-point play to push the lead to
68-64 with 1:30 left. The Bulldogs then went 9-of-10 from the free
throw line in the final minute of play to earn the win.
