COLUMBIA, S.C. ÇƒÓ South Carolina whipped UNC Asheville 71-51 in menës basketball last Thursday night.
The Gamecocks were led by Dominique Archie, who scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
For the first time this season, no Bulldog finished in double figures. Leading UNCA were team scoring leader Bryan Smithson and K.J. Garland, each of whom netted seven points. Previously, Smithson was averaging 15.9 points per game.
After turning over the ball in its first possession, South Carolina
(8-2) raced to a 19-4 lead by hitting eight consecutive shots,
including three 3-pointers.
UNCA (4-9) rallied to narrow the lead to 30-22 with 5:17 left in the
first half, but South Carolina hit its final five shots to lead 42-24
at halftime.
In the second half, the Gamecocks led by as many as 33 points before the Bulldogs trimmed the margin to 20 at the gameës end.
While South Carolina shot 47.5 percent from the field and hit
nine-of-27 3-pointers, UNCA shot 32.3 percent from the field and hit
two-of-18 3-pointers.
