MHC Lions roar, devour Flying Dutchmen in opener

GREENSBORO ÇƒÓ The Mars Hill College Lions ripped the Greensboro College Flying Dutchmen 38-13 in football in the season-opener for both teams last Saturday night.

MHC generated 500 yards of offense, with senior quarterback Brandon Sims rushing for 141 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Kendrick Johnson led the Lions with 184 rushing yards.
Next, Mars Hill will square off with Brevard College, with kickoff set at 7 p.m. Saturday at Brevard High School.

Hawks tame Tornadoes

39-7 for ǃÚrainy night in Ga.ë

ROME, Ga. ÇƒÓ In its season-opener, the Shorter College Hawks whipped the Brevard College Tornados 39-7 in football last Saturday.


The loss dropped BC, which reinstated football this season following a 56-year lapse,  to 0-2.

WCU stomps Chowan 42-0 to win 9th straight opener

CULLOWHEE ÇƒÓ Western Carolina University annihilated Chowan College 42-0 in the season-opener for both teams that drew less than 1,000 fans to Whitmire Stadium on a rainy Thursday night.

The Catamounts, who won their ninth straight opener, amassed 381 yards in total offense over the Hawks.

Tailback Darius Fudge rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns, while his backup, Mike Malone, rushed for 90 yards and a 6-yard scoring scamper in the fourth period. Meanwhile, quarterback Bennett Swygert threw for 156 yards and two scores.


The Catamounts are off Saturday and return at 6 p.m. Sept. 16 to host Eastern Kentucky.


N.C. State tops ASU 23-10

in spite of four turnovers

BOONE ÇƒÓ With stout defense, N.C. State beat Appalachian State 23-10 in the season-opener for both teams at Carter-Finley Stadium last Saturday night.


Despite four Wolfpack turnovers, the Mountaineers, the defending 1-AA national champions, were unable to capitalize on their 1-A opponentës mistakes.


Next, in a matchup that will pit the last two 1-AA national champs, ASU will host James Madison at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.


Steam skins Grizzlies

30-7 with aerial attack

BLACK MOUNTAIN ÇƒÓ The Nashville Steam rolled past the Asheville Grizzlies 30-7 in minor league football at Owen Middle School on Aug. 27.


Leading the Storm attack was quarterback Phillipe Hall, who fired four touchdown passes against Asheville (5-2).


With only five hits, Tourists unravel Greenjackets 6-2


AUGUSTA, Ga. ÇƒÓ Despite smacking only five hits, the Asheville Tourists beat the Augusta GreenJackets 6-2 in front of 4,417 fans last Saturday night.


Getting the win was starter Chaz Roe (7-4), who allowed two hits, one run and five walks in seven innings. He also struck out seven.


Augusta edges Asheville

5-4 with ninth-inning rally

AUGUSTA, Ga. ÇƒÓ The Augusta GreenJackets rallied late to nip the error-prone Asheville Tourists 5-4 last Friday night.


Trailing 4-2, Augusta scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game. The GreenJackets scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.


Getting the loss for Asheville was reliever David Patton (7-4), who allowed three hits, one run (none earned) and two walks in 1-2/3 innings. The Tourists committed three errors.


Intimidators triumph 12-10

as Tourists lose home finale

The Asheville Tourists rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning but the effort was in vain as the Kannapolis Intimidators held on to win 12-10 in front of 2,239 fans at McCormick Field last Thursday night.


For the season, Asheville drew a record 167,745 fans at home, eclipsing the old mark of 162,345 fans set in 2000.


The Tourists stole five bases to raise their league-leading total to 263. Designated hitter Eric Young Jr., who leads all of professional baseball in stolen bases, stole his 86th base of the season.


Taking the loss for the Tourists was starter Brandon Durden (10-4), who allowed eight hits, eight runs (seven earned) and three walks in six innings. He struck out six.


Asheville KOs Kannapolis

10-2 with balanced attack

KANNAPOLIS ÇƒÓ Behind a balanced attack, the Asheville Tourists throttled the Kannapolis Intimidators 10-2 in baseball in front of 1,999 fans last Wednesday.


Getting the win for Asheville was Xavier Cedeno (8-8), who allowed three hits, two runs (none earned) and four walks in five innings. He struck out six.


Leading the Tourists at the plate was third baseman Phillip Cuadrado, who hit two home runs, scoring two runs and batting in eight.


Intimidators humbled

as Tourists romp 21-2

KANNAPOLIS ÇƒÓ The Asheville Tourists ripped the Kannapolis Intimidators 21-2 in baseball in front of 1,090 fans on Aug. 29.


Leading Ashevilleës attack was center fielder Dexter Fowler, who finished 3-for-6 with three runs and five RBIs; first baseman Chris Cook, who was 2-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs, including a three-run homer; and right fielder Daniel Carte, who went 3-for-5 with four runs and three RBIs.


Starter Alan Johnson (13-5) got the win, allowing three hits and one run in six innings, while striking out six.


Asheville scores early,

cruises to a 7-4 victory

KANNAPOLIS ÇƒÓ After grabbing a 3-0 first-inning lead, the Asheville Tourists cruised to a 7-4 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators in baseball in front of 769 fans on Aug. 28.


Picking up the win was starter Chaz Roe (6-4), who allowed eight hits, four runs and two walks in five innings. He struck out five. Andrew Johnston earned his 25th save of the season by pitching a hitless final inning.
