UVA-Wise beats BC, 44-10

BREVARD ÇƒÓ The University of Virginia-Wise thrashed Brevard College 44-20 in football in front of 5,500 fans at Brevard Highës Memorial Stadium last Saturday night.


The game marked BCës return to the gridiron as a provisional Division II team after 56 years ÇƒÓ and the first time it has played football as a four-year institution. Harry Truman was president when BC, then a two-year school, last played football ÇƒÓ in 1950.

In an effort tor raise its profile and boost enrollment, the 600-student school had invested about $1.5 million in startup costs for a new football program, including $500,000 in scholarships for a roster of 92 players. Bobby Poss, touted as an area high school coaching legend, is the coach of the Tornados.

The team, comprised almost entirely of true freshmen, trailed 17-13 with 5:01 left in the first half, but ran out of steam in the second half ÇƒÓ committing three fumbles ÇƒÓ against the speedier and more experienced Cavaliers.

BC quarterback Will Cox finished 4-for-9 with 21 yards, while Tyrone Arrington and Donald Hudson rushed for 50 and 44 yards, respectively.

Hudson, who later left the game with a concussion and was taken to the hospital as a precaution, ran two yards for a score with 8:31 left in the second quarter. In the next BC offensive series, Hudson threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Josh Humphries on a halfback pass.

Arrington completed the Tornadosë scoring with a two-yard run that capped a 10-play, 92-yard drive late in the fourth quarter.

The Tornados gave up 454 totals yards ÇƒÓ 255 of which were through the air.

Next, BC will square off with Shorter College in Rome, Ga., at 2 p.m. Saturday.
