Grizzlies burn Firecats 19-13 on tipped-pass TD
The Asheville Grizzlies beat the Charleston (S.C.) Firecats 19-13 in fooball at Memorial Stadium last Saturday night.
The win was keyed by the catch of a tipped-ball deep pass by Grizzliesë wide receiver Tennyson Rucker in the endzone midway through the third quarter. The pass was thrown by Asheville quarterback Dewwayne Lewis. Rucker also caught a 23-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
A 21-yard field goal by OëNeil McCall gave the Grizzlies (4-1-0) a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Tourists swat Sand Gnats
3-2 with early scoring burst
SAVANNAH, Ga. ÇƒÓ The Asheville Tourists clipped the Savannah Sand Gnats 3-2 in baseball in front of 705 fans Sunday.
Asheville scored three runs in the first two innings and then held on for the narrow victory.
Starter Alan
Johnson (12-5) got the win, allowing four hits and two runs in eight
innings. He struck out seven. Andrew Johnston earned his 21st save with
a perfect final inning.
At the plate,
the Tourists were led by designated hitter Chris Cook, who finished
2-for-3, including a two-run shot in the second inning.
Three-run 9th inning fuels Savannah over Asheville

The Savannah Sand Gnats scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth
inning to edge the Asheville Tourists 6-5 in baseball in front of 910
fans last Saturday night.
Taking the loss
for Asheville was reliever David Patton (6-3), who allowed five hits
and three runs in the final two-thirds of an inning.
Leading the
Tourists at the plate was left fielder Cole Garner, who finished
1-for-4 with one run and three RBIs, including a two-run shot in the
sixth; and third baseman Jason Van Kooten, who was 3-for-5 with one run
and one RBI. Van Kootenës production included a double and a stolen
base.
Sacrifice fly lifts Tourists to 1-0 win over Sand Gnats
SAVANNAH, Ga. ÇƒÓ The Asheville Tourists nipped the Savannah Sand Gnats 1-0 in baseball last Friday night.
Shorstop Chris Nelson hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, scoring center fielder Dexter Fowler.
Touristsë
starter Shane Lindsay (1-0), who allowed four hits and two walks in
five innings, got the win. He struck out nine. Reliever Andrew
Johnston, who hurled a scoreless ninth, earned his 20th save.
Late surge lifts Asheville
over Savannah in 10 innings
SAVANNAH, Ga. ǃÓ
The Asheville Tourists scored two runs in the 10th inning to beat the
Savannah Sand Gnats 8-6 in baseball last Thursday night.
Asheville trailed 5-0 after the first inning, but chipped away until it tied the game at 6-6 in the ninth.
Getting the win
for the Tourists was reliever Buzz Vargas (4-3), who pitched two
scoreless innings, walking one and striking out four. Earning his 19th
save of the season was Andrew Johnston, who pitched the final inning.
BlueClaws jump Tourists
6-4 with pitching, late rally
Behind solid
pitching, the Lakewood BlueClaws topped the Asheville Tourists 6-4 in
baseball in front of 1,797 fans at McCormick Field last Wednesday night.
Lakewood starter
Zach Cline (6-3) hurled five perfect innings in a 6-1/3-inning outing,
allowing five hits, three runs, no walks and fanning four batters.
Taking the loss
for Asheville was starter Xavier Cedeno (6-8), who allowed 10 hits,
four runs and two walks in six innings. He struck out three.
Asheville beats Lakewood
3-1 with pitching, late rally
In a pitching
duel, the Asheville Tourists clipped the Lakewood BlueClaws 3-1 in
baseball in front of 2,897 fans at McCormick Field on Aug. 8.
The game was scoreless until the seventh inning, when Lakewood scored its only run of the game.
However, Asheville rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth to provide the winning margin.

for the Tourists was starter Alan Johnson (11-5), who allowed six hits
and one run in eight innings. He struck out seven and gave up no walks.
Earning his 18th save of the season was Andrew Johnston, who pitched
one perfect inning, striking out two.

defanged as Tourists win
Despite facing
the top pitcher in the South Atlantic League, the Asheville Tourists
sizzled at the plate to beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 9-7 in baseball in
front of 1,526 fans at McCormick Field on Aug. 7.
Lakewood star
southpaw Matt Maloney (13-7) took the loss, allowing nine hits, eight
runs (five earned) and two walks in 4-2/3 innings.
Leading
Asheville offensively was hot-hitting third baseman Phillip Cuadrado,
who finished 2-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Among his hits was a
home run.
Also
contributing at the plate for Asheville were first baseman Chris Cook,
who finished 2-for-3, with one run and two RBIs; and center fielder
Dexter Fowler, who was 3-for-5, with two RBIs.
Touristsë
starter Chaz Roe (4-4) earned the win, allowing six hits, four runs
(three earned) and two walks in five innings. He fanned five BlueClaws.
Savannah over Asheville
BLACK MOUNTAIN ǃÓ
Stuart Moran and Sesalie Smather won the menës and womenës divisions in
a field of 143 runners in the rainy Sourwood 5K last Saturday morning.
Moran, 30, finished at 15:34, while Smather, 36, clocked in at 19:30. She finished 11th overall.
Bulldogs to visit Tar Heels
for 2nd consecutive year
For a second consecutive year, the UNC Asheville menës basketball team will square off the the University of North Carolina.
The Bulldogs
will travel to Chapel Hill on Dec. 16 to face the Tar Heels, coached by
Asheville native Roy Williams. The game time has not been decided yet.
Last season, UNCA received more than $50,000 to square off with UNC in a game won by the Tar Heels 89-47.
