Lakewood tops Asheville 10-7 with 6th-inning rally
The Lakewood BlueClaws scored five runs in the sixth inning to rip the Asheville Tourists 10-7 in baseball in front of 2,112 fans at McCormick Field last Sunday night.
Asheville scored all seven of its runs in the fifth inning, while Lakewood scored five runs each in the third and sixth innings to secure the victory.
Taking
the loss for Asheville was reliever James Burok (4-6), who allowed one
hit, three runs and two walks in one-third of an inning.
Offensively, the
Tourists were led by third baseman Phillip Cuadrado, who finished
1-for-3, with one run and two RBIs; and second baseman Jason Van
Kooten, who was 1-for-4, with one run and two RBIs. Cuadrado ignited
Asheville??s hot fifth inning when he led off with a solo shot.
Tourists nip Shorebirds
13-12, thwart comeback
The Asheville
Tourists foiled a late comeback effort to edge the Delmarva Shorebirds
13-12 in baseball in front of 3,347 fans at McCormick Field last Friday
night.
In the first
inning, Delmarva starter Brandon Erbe allowed five hits, eight runs
(seven earned) and three walks ?? without registering an out ?? before
being replaced on the mound.
However,
trailing 13-7 the top of the ninth, the Shorebirds scored five runs,
but stranded the potential tying run at third base.
Getting the win
for Asheville was starter Brandon Durden (9-3), who allowed eight hits,
five runs and one walk in six innings. He fanned four batters. Earning
his 16th save of the season was Andrew Johnston, who allowed three hits
and one run in the final two-thirds of an inning.
At the plate,
the Tourists were led by third baseman Phillip Cuadrado, who finished
4-for-5 with five RBIs. He smacked two doubles and a home run.
For Saturday??s
game, the Asheville team wore Colorado Rockies?? jerseys to commemorate
a two-year extension of the farm team??s ties to the Major League squad.
A delegation
representing the Rockies and Palace Baseball, the owner of the
Tourists, announced the extension at a press conference prior to the
game. Asheville will remain the Rockies?? low-Class A affiliate through
2008. The team has been affiliated with the Rockies for the past 13
seasons.
Asheville beats Delmarva
5-3 as bullpen dominates
Behind strong
pitching from its bullpen, the Asheville Tourists shot down the
Delmarva Shorebirds 5-3 in baseball in front of 2,252 fans at McCormick
Field last Friday night.
Delmarva raced
to a 3-0 lead, including a two-run home run by Mark Fleisher in the
third inning, but Asheville??s pitchers tightened up for the final six
innings and its offense cranked out five unanswered runs.
The Tourists
tied the game by scoring three runs in the fifth inning. They then
finished off the scoring ?? and secured the victory ?? with left fielder
Cole Garner??s two-run shot in the sixth. Garner has swatted a team-high
15 home runs this season. Also blazing at the plate was first baseman
Michael Paulk, who finished 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs.
Asheville starter Xavier Cedeno, who allowed six hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks, settled down after three innings.
However, four
members of the Asheville bullpen ?? each pitching one inning ?? combined
to shut down Delmarva for the rest of the game. Reliever Buzz Vargus
(3-3) got the win, while Andrew Johnson earned his 15th save of the
season. The other bullpen contributors included Jon George and David
Patton. Indeed, Asheville??s bullpen quartet proved harmonic as it
allowed a combined one hit over the final four innings.
Shorebirds fleece Tourists
8-6 on disputed decisions
The Delmarva
Shorebirds flew past the Asheville Tourists 8-6 in baseball in front of
3,238 fans at McCormick Field last Thursday night.
Tourists??
manager Joe Mikulik disputed several calls, but to no avail.
Ultimately, the calls made the difference in the final outcome.
Asheville
starter Alan Johnston (10-5) took the loss, allowing 10 hits, seven
runs (six earned) and two walks in five innings. He struck out two.
Leading the
Tourists at the plate were center fielder Dexter Fowler and left
fielder Cole Garner, each of whom smacked first-pitch home runs.
Fowler, who finished 2-for-3, swatted a two-run homer, while Garner,
who was 2-for-3, crushed a solo shot.
Asheville nips Delmarva
by stealing home in eighth
The Asheville
Tourists rallied to score four runs in the eighth inning to edge the
Delmarva Shorebirds 14-13 in baseball in front of 2,097 fans at
McCormick Field last Wednesday night.
Asheville
(20-18) committed a season-high five errors, but managed to win ?? with
dramatic flair ?? when second baseman Jason Van Kooten scored from third
base on a wild pitch by Shorebirds reliever Blake Owen. Van Kooten
reportedly slid in for the score and just missed a lunging tag.
Asheville smacked 14 hits and executed three double plays in downing Delmarva (13-24).
Offensively, the
Tourists were led by catcher-shortstop Chris Nelson, who finished
2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run and five RBIs.
Picking up the
win was reliever Jon George (4-4), who allowed one run on two hits in
the eighth inning. Recording his 14th save of the season was Andrew
Johnston, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Tourists eclipse Suns
5-4 with hot ninth inning
HAGERSTOWN,
W.Va. ?? Fueled by a late hitting surge, the Asheville Tourists nipped
the Hagerstown Suns 5-4 in baseball on July 31.
Asheville first
baseman smacked a two-out single in the ninth inning to score third
baseman Phillip Cuadrado, breaking a 4-4 tie and securing the win.
Cuadrado had reached first on a single and advanced to second on right
fielder Daniel Carte??s walk.
Cuadrado led the Tourists at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Getting the win
for Asheville was reliever David Patton (5-2), who pitched a perfect
inning. Andrew Johnston relieved Patton in the ninth to record his 13th
save of the season.
Ex-Ga. coach, AD to speak
at BC??s ?¥Pigskin Pig-out??
BREVARD ?? The Brevard College Tornado Club will host a ?®Pigskin Pig-out Party?∆ at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Former
University of Georgia football coach and athletic director Vince Dooley
will be the guest speaker at the event, which also will feature Brevard
College coach Bobby Poss and the new Tornados football team.
Tickets to the
party, which includes a barbecue dinner, are $15 for adults and $5 for
children. Tickets may be purchased from Tornado Club members or through
the Brebard Athletics Department at 884-8276.
Ex-UNCA freshman star
makes transfer to Mercer
Guard Michael
Ellis, who left the UNC Asheville men??s basketball program last season
after being named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year, has
transferred to Mercer University, a Division 1 program in Macon, Ga.
Ellis averaged
9.8 points per game for the Bulldogs. He also recorded single-game
scoring highs of 29, 28 and 25 points after moving into the starting
lineup near the midway point of the season.
UNCA women??s team
lauded for sportsmanship
CHARLOTTE ?? UNC
Asheville has been awarded the Big South Conference??s Team
Sportsmanship Award for women??s outdoor track and field, the league
announced recently.
It is UNCA??s second team sportsmanship award of the year, as the Bulldogs?? men??s soccer squad was honored in the fall.
UNCA, coached by
Dean Duncan, received three first-place votes and 12 points for the
award to edge Virginia Military Institute, which finished with one
first-place vote and 11 points.
MHC receives largest-ever
gift to its athletics programs
MARS HILL ??
Justus ?®Jud?∆ and Jo Ellen Ammons of Raleigh have given Mars Hill
College a gift of $1.6 million, the majority of which will be directed
to upgrading the school??s athletic facilities.
It is the
largest athletic donation ever received by MHC. The gift will create
the Jud and Jo Ellen Ammons Football Center, which will include
refurbished grandstands, a new all-weather field turf playing surface,
an entry plaza, and the new Merrill Press Box.
Mr. Ammons is a
Mars Hill native who is a descendant of one of the founding families of
MHC and also holds the distinction of having an ancestor serve as the
college??s president. He is a member of the Board of Trustees and is
past chair of the Building and Grounds Committee and the Finance
Committee.
Mrs. Ammons is a graduate and member of the Meredith College Board of Trustees.
