AUGUSTA, Ga. — For the second time in 10 days, Madison Bumgarner (7-2) shut out the Asheville Tourists in a 5-0 win for the Augusta GreenJackets last Saturday.
The North Carolina native struck out 10 Tourists and pitched seven innings in the win. Augusta (43-29, 2-1) scored four runs in the third inning to take the third game of the five game series.
Bumgarner held Asheville to five hits and no runs and has now tossed 14
consecutive scoreless innings against the Tourists. Augusta took
advantage of three miscues by the Tourists to score four runs in the
third inning and one in the fifth secure the win.
Bruce Billings (4-5) was handed the loss with five innings worked on
the night. Billings allowed a one out double to Nick Noonan to score
two runs in the third.
The defense faltered behind Billings as he battled through five innings
and allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits. Billings struck out
five and walked one in the loss. Robinson Fabian, Edgmer Escolona and
Joey Williamson combined for three scoreless innings in relief.
Asheville was shut out for just the fourth time this season — the
second time by the 18-year-old Bumgarner. The Lenoir native Bumgarner
has allowed just four earned runs in his last 10 starts.
This week, the Tourists will host the Hickory Crawdads at 7:05 tonight
and Thursday and host the Greenville Drive at the same time on Friday
and Saturday.
