A six-run fifth inning and the first fireworks show of the season at McCormick Field sent 3,889 fans — the season’s largest crowd — home happy as the Tourists defeated the Columbus Catfish 9-3 in a rare Sunday night game.
With the game tied at three and the bases loaded with Darin Holcomb at the plate, Columbus reliever Joshua Johnson uncorked a wild pitch to score Brian Aguailar and break the tie. Then Holcomb drilled a double to score the remaining two men to give the Tourists a three-run lead.
The lead expanded when Jeffrey Cunningham doubled to bring in
Holcomb, setting the stage for a blast over the right field fence off
the bat of Brian Rike. Rike’s tenth home run of the year gave the
Tourists all the scoring they’d need.
Sheng-An Kuo (5-3) wasn’t as sharp as he’s been this season for
the Tourists, but he was good enough to pick up the win, firing five
innings and allowing three runs on five hits and four walks with two
strikeouts.
Columbus got out to an early lead in the second inning when two
walks and a single led to a bases-loaded, RBI single from Omar Luna to
bring in a pair. Asheville answered in the second with a Rike RBI
groundout. Greg Sexton added another run for the Catfish in the third
with an RBI on his second of two singles on the night.
The Tourists tied the game in the bottom of the third, starting
the inning with a Brian Lapin double. Everth Cabrera would bring Lapin
around to score on his RBI single. He scored on a wild pitch from
Catfish starter Woods Fines, who tossed four innings and looked shaky
in the no decision.
Joshua Johnson (2-5), making his first relief outing of the season after starting nine games, got the loss.
