CULLOWHEE — One more player who was on last season’s squad no longer is listed as a member of the football team at Western Carolina University.
Paul Gilmore, a defensive end who played at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, recently stated that he was kicked off the team for missing two workouts.
Gimore, a rising sophomore, played in nine games last season and registered eight tackles.
His departure brings the total to 12 players from the 2007 team who are no longer with the program under first-year coach Dennis Wagner.
The Catamounts finished 2007 with a 1-10 record, including a blowout
loss to neighboring rival Appalachian State University, resulting in
the firing of head coach Kent Briggs, an Asheville native and
quarterback for WCU during its football glory years.
Meanwhile, Wagner announced the signing of two defensive linemen,
including Justin Collins and Jerry Saxon. The pair bring the total
signings to his first class to 21 players.
Collins, who originally inked a contract with Iowa, collected 60
tackles and eight sacks last season for Kilgore College in Texas.
Saxon, who played at Palmetto High in Williamston, S.C., registered 172 tackles and 16 sacks in three seasons.
