ATLANTA, Ga. ?? Georgia Tech went on a 14-0 run to end the first half and then went on to record an 80-52 win over UNC Asheville in men??s basketball last Friday night at Alexander Coliseum.
The Bulldogs (0-1) were led by senior Chad Mohn with a career-high 21
points. He also pulled down nine rebounds. Oliver Holmes added 12
points and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Georgia Tech had five players in double figures. They were led by
Anthony Morrow with 15 points, while Jeremis Smith finished with 14
points. Lewis Clinch came off the bench to score 13 points. Ra??Sean
Dickey contributed 12 points. Mario West added 11 points.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) went on a 19-2 run in the first half to jump
out to a 23-6 lead. The Bulldogs hurt themselves with five missed free
throws and 10 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the half.
However, UNCA settled down and made a run of its own. The Bulldogs went
on a 15-3 run to cut the Georgia Tech lead to 26-21 with six minutes to
go in the half. Asheville got six points from Mohn during the run and
forced five Tech turnovers.
But the Yellow Jackets held the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the half. They got six buckets and led at halftime, 40-21.
In the second half, the Bulldogs cut the lead to 40-26 on a three-pointer from Mohn and a lay-up from Brett Warner.
Georgia Tech quickly went on a 12-2 run to get the lead back up to
52-28. Asheville could get no closer than 24 points the rest of the
game.
UNCA missed its first five free throws, but finished the game by making
its final 21 free throws. The Bulldogs finished 21-of-26 from the
charity stripe for 81 percent and were a perfect 16-of-16 from the free
throw line in the second half.
Asheville struggled from the field as it shot just 32 percent (15-of-46) and was 1-of-14 from beyond the arc for 7 percent.
