Katie Baldwin led three UNC Asheville Bulldogs in double figures with 13 points and Stacy Shepard grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds as the UNCA women??s basketball team won its season-opener for the first time in 14 years with a 65-47 victory over Jacksonville University last Friday night at the Justice Center.
UNCA (1-0) used a 16-3 run to start the second half to break open a
30-26 game at the half. Jacksonville (0-1) missed its first 19 shots of
the half as the Dolphins managed just three free throws in the first 11
and a half minutes of the second period.
Krystal Hood scored 11 points, despite picking up her fourth foul early
in the second half. Ashton Barton chipped in 10 points and six rebounds
for the Bulldogs.
UNCA jumped out to a 27-10 lead in the first half, but JU responded
with a 16-3 run to close out the half down by just four points.
Ashley Williams led the Dolphins with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Nakina Alford had 11 points and five rebounds.
Cold shooting to start the second half allowed Asheville to build its
lead to double figures with a 38-28 lead at the 13:14 mark. JU shot 21
percent in the second half and committed 26 turnovers in the game. UNCA
shot 47 percent in the second half and finished the night at 43 percent.
