Tourists wreck Drive 6-1 behind standout pitching

GREENVILLE, S.C. ?? Behind stellar pitching, the Asheville Tourists grounded the Greenville Drive 6-1 in baseball last Sunday.

Starter Brandon Durden (5-1) got the win for the Tourists, pitching seven hitless innings.

At the plate, Asheville was led by catcher-shortstop Chris Nelson, who finished 4-for-5. He scored two runs and recorded one RBI.


 
Asheville wins 1st game, loses nightcap Saturday

GREENVILLE, S.C. ?? The Asheville Tourists split a doubleheader with the Greenville Drive, winning the first game 3-1 and dropping the nightcap 6-4 last Saturday night.


In the win, the Tourists completed a game that had been suspended on June 11 in Asheville. Getting the victory was reliever Chad Bailey (2-0), who pitched one inning. Earning his third save of the season was Andrew Johnston, who pitched the hitless final inning.


In the nightcap, Asheville trailed 5-0 after two innings as starter Zach Simons (5-6) took the loss, allowing seven hits, six runs and five walks in four innings.


The Tourists rallied in the third inning, as left fielder Cole Garner smacked a three-run home run to pull the team within two runs. However, the effort was to no avail as Asheville never got closer.


Tourists take early lead;
cruise to win over Drive 6-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. ?? The Asheville Tourists jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to a 6-3 win over the Greenville Drive last Friday night.

Leading Asheville at the plate was right fielder Daniel Carte, who swatted a home run, a double and batted in three runs. Left fielder Cole Garner and designated hitter Chris Cook also hit solo shots.

Getting the win for the Tourists was starter Xavier Cedeno (4-4), who allowed six hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks in six innings.

Greensboro rips Ashville
6-1 with balanced attack

Behind a balanced attack, the Greensboro Grasshoppers jumped the Asheville Tourists 6-1 in baseball in front of 2,132 fans at McCormick Field last Wednesday.

Greensboro scored two runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh before Asheville recorded its one run in the eighth.


Taking the loss for Asheville was starter Chaz Roe (1-3), allowing six hits, two runs and two walks in six innings. He struck out six Grasshoppers.


Tourists clip Grasshoppers
to win duel between hurlers

In a pitching duel, the Asheville Tourists evened its record at 32-32 by grounding the Greensboro Grasshoppers 4-1 in baseball in front of 2,276 fans at McCormick Field on June 13.

Starters Brandon Durden for Asheville and Chris Volstad for Greensboro sparkled on the mound, but the Tourists scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to secure the victory. They added an insurance run in the eighth inning.


Despite Durden??s efforts, reliever David Patton (4-1) got the win for Asheville, allowing no hits, no runs and one walk in 1-1/3 inning. Meanwhile, Durden allowed three hits, one run and five walks in 6-2/3 innings. He also fanned five Grasshoppers. Andrew Johnston pitched the ninth for his third save of the season.


Volstad (5-6) took the loss for Greensboro, allowing seven hits, three runs (none earned) and one walk in seven innings. He struck out six.


At the plate, center fielder Florentino Nunez finished 3-for-3 with one RBI and two stolen bases.
