The shift was announced after the center fielder got a hit off an eight-time all-star, Pedro Martinez, who was making a rehab start for the New York Metsí farm club in St. Lucie, Fla.

However, team officials noted that Maybinís promotion was based not on his hit off Martinez, but on his overall performance.

At Lakeland, Maybinís batting average of .304 was tied for the team lead with William Rhymes. He also had 44 RBIs, 10 home runs, 14 doubles and two stolen bases.

Since his promotion, Maybin has been on a hot streak, smacking home runs in three consecutive games. His four-bagger lifted the Erie SeaWolves to a 7-6 win over the Connecticut Defenders last Sunday. He is 4-for-10 with three solo homers, four RBIs and six runs scored through early this week.

Maybin is rated the top minor-league prospect for the Detroit Tigers organization by Baseball America.
