Roy Williams, an Asheville native, was among seven men selected to join the Basketball Hall of Fame on April 2. He is head basketball coach at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina.
Williams, 56, has registered a 524-131 record in 19 seasons as a college basketball coach. His winning percentage ó .804 ó is the highest in the country among active coaches and he has more victories after 19 seasons than any college coach in history.
Following 15 years at Kansas, he has posted a 106-30 record in four
seasons in Chapel Hill. His 2005 Tar Heels won the national
championship.
Williams, who has been named the NCAA Coach of the Years six times, has been to five Final Fours and three title games.
Also selected to the Hall were Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson,
WNBAís Houston Comets coach Van Chancellor, the 1966 Texas Western
basketball team, former NBA referee Mendy Rudolph and international
coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Yugoslaviaís Mirko Novosel.
