UNC Asheville roared to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Single A Asheville Tourists later mustered two big innings of offensive fireworks to defeat the Bulldogs 8-6 in exhibition baseball on April 3 at McCormick Field.
UNCAís Matt Henson led off the game with one of his two base hits of the night. Kyle Smith followed with a single, after which Rob Vernon singled to score Henson.
The first-inning action continued for the Bulldogs as John Whited
reached base on a fielderís choice, when the Touristsí shortstop threw
home late as Smith scored. David Williams then smacked a triple off the
center field wall, scoring Vernon and Whited and pushing the Bulldogsí
lead to 4-0.
Undaunted, the Tourists, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, scored five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-4 lead.
However, Williams got the fifth inning started on a hot note for UNCA
with a base hit, and eventually moved to third base. With two outs, Wes
Skidmore hit a single that enabled Williams to score and tie the game
at 5-5.
The Tourists scored the final three runs of the game in the seventh
inning, highlighted by a solo home run by Jhaysson Agustin, one of two
home runs hit by the Tourists on the night.
UNCAís Michael Bogaert, who pitched two innings of relief, got the loss.
