AUSTIN, Texas ó LSU shellacked UNC Asheville 77-39 in the first round of the NCAA womenís basketball tournament last Saturday at the Erwin Center.
The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for the Bulldogs and sent them home abruptly. In its first-ever appearance in the womenís division of the NCAA, UNCA (21-12) earned an automatic berth by winning the Big South Conference Tournament.
However,
Southeast Conference powerhouse LSU (27-7), ranked 12th, proved to be
too much for UNCA, as guard RaShonta LeBlanc scored 12 first-half
points, propelling the Tigers to a 39-19 halftime lead.
LSU extended its lead to 68-28 with eight minutes left in the game, as LeBlanc and Quianna Chaney scored 15 points each.
Despite UNCA
reserve Kyla Jonesí seven first-half points, the Bulldogs were held to
one of their lowest scoring totals of the season. UNCA entered the game
as the BSCís leading scoring team, averaging 68.5 points per game.
With five minutes left, LSU showed utter domination of UNCA, as it had forced 23 turnovers and blocked eight shots.
While its season
is over, the Bulldogsí womenís basketball team became the first in
school history to top the 20-win mark since UNCA became a NCAA Division
1 school 20 years ago. The senior class, the most successful in school
history, recorded a 73-46 record over the past four years.
