Winthrop clobbers UNCA to end Bulldogsí season

ROCK HILL, S.C. ó Winthrop University whipped UNC Asheville 79-60 in a semifinal game of the Big South Conference menís basketball tournament at Winthrop Coliseum last Thursday.

The loss ended the season for UNCA (12-19), which previously had reeled off four consecutive victories.
Top-seeded Winthrop (27-4) turned a competitive game into a rout by holding fifth-seeded UNCA scoreless for nearly six minutes in the second half. The Bulldogs shot a paltry 34.5 percent in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Eagles, who have won 17 consecutive games, earned their 22nd straight home win.


The Bulldogs were led by guard K.J. Garland, who netted 21 points,  but shot 3-of-10 in the second half.


UNCA led by as many of five points in the first half, but fell behind 37-33 at halftime. With 14 minutes left in the game, the Bulldogs trailed 48-42, but then they suffered a scoring lapse until the 8:20 mark. During that UNCA drought, Winthrop scored 13 points to gain a 19-point lead.


The Bulldogs closed to within 14 points, but the Eagles pulled away at the end to win by 19 points. Winthrop outrebounded UNCA 43-27.
