UNC Asheville sank its free throws in the final 30 seconds to snap a four-game losing streak and defeat Radford University 78-68 in menís basketball during Homecoming Day last Saturday at the Justice Center.
UNCA (9-18, 4-8) fell behind early, but junior guard Bryan Smithsonís hot shooting kept his team in the game in the first half. In the final minutes of the half, the Bulldogs tied the game at 37. Smithson tied a career high with 25 points, including 16 in the first half.
With
the momentum going into halftime in their favor, the Bulldogs opened
the second half with a 20-5 run, with K.J. Garland, also a junior
guard, reeling off 14 of his 18 points. With 8:24 left, Garland hit
consecutive 3-pointers to propel UNCA to a 57-42 lead.
Radford staged a comeback late in the game, getting as close as 68-62,
before Smithson netted four free throws in the final 30 seconds to nail
down the win. Smithson hit all seven of his free throws in the game.
Also chipping in
for UNCA were junior forward Vincent James, with 11 points; and
sophomore guard Ried Augst, 10 points. In addition, Kenny George, the
Bulldogsí 7-foot-7 sophomore center, netted eight points and grabbed
eight rebounds in a career-high 19 minutes.
